Jozi Regional Finalist: Get To Know Mash O

26 Jul 2019

What is your name, age and where are you from?

Mashoto Lucky Mokobane. I am 27 years old and I’m from a small town in Limpopo – but I was raised on the dirty streets of Thembisa.

What kind of work do you do currently?

I am actually my own hustle. I am a DJ, producer, sound engineer and sound designer. So this is what takes up all my time – my passion.

How did you fall in love with music?

Riky, your Kwaito, Spikiri, House! I fell In love with music when I was still a young boy. One of my uncles was a dancer for an old Kwaito group called ‘New School’ – that is one of the factors that got me interested in music.

When did you start producing music?

In 2007 I started with basic beats. I’m self-taught and did not study music. I started getting serious in 2008 when I produced my first big house hit which made it big in the hood I grew up in. It was played by Black Coffee and Shimza in the clubs and after this, I took producing seriously.

How would you describe your music style?

I would like to consider myself an artist, I do not want to box myself in… As a brand, my fans know me as an afro house producer. So, I would say this is more my style. Hip hop is not really my sound, but I produce what feels good at the time.

What inspires the music you make?

Life. Basically I can decide to stay where I want, but I chose the hood. This is where I feel alive and am inspired the most. There is a lot of emotion that is drawn from the people around me. I produce what I am feeling at that moment, my daily experiences.

What was your first thought when you received the call from Rémy Martin, letting you know that you were through to the regional finals?

Yoh! I got a call in the middle of a session and I could not hear what was being said to me at first. When I finally heard the news, I was super excited.

How does it feel to have the opportunity to work with Riky Rick?

I have been producing beats for some time now and I have beats that are inspired by him. It would be an honour to work with him and to work on something new with him. I have 5 more new beats that are inspired by him… but that’s hush hush.

How do you feel about performing on 26 July in front of a live audience? And what can people look forward from you on the night?

I can’t wait to see the reaction of the crowd – that is the most Important thing! I have realised that the new sound is a lot of trap – we have forgotten about real music. Mixing old school and new school – real music, is key. A progressing song that tells a story… that’s what they can expect.

The next week is going to be a big one for you, what are you looking forward to most?

Today I am looking forward to meeting Master A Flat and getting advice from and learning from him. The studio session is what I’m mostly looking forward to.
